508 Mentions on Rest

Kathleen and I just returned from a one-week vacation in Oregon. We stayed at Camp Sherman which is simply one building at the crossroads of some gravel roads, and lots of campgrounds and cabins. We rented a cabin right on the river with some lifelong friends. This is my kind of vacation! We had lots of conversation, fishing, good food, and naps.  As usual, I didn’t realize how tired I was. I am a Type A, Driver personality and never seem to be able to let my foot off the throttle. There is always so much to do both professionally and personally, and we never seem to have enough time to get everything done.  Does this sound familiar?

Coming back from my vacation I feel rested!  Not only do I feel better, and have more energy, it gives me a fresh outlook and enthusiasm for the days ahead. I took some time to look up the word “rest” in my computer program on the Bible. I discovered there were 508 references to “rest” in the bible in this particular program. So clearly, rest sounds like an important thing for us to keep in mind. From only the second chapter in the Bible, “By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work” (New International Version Bible, Gen. 2:2), to one of the most familiar in the New Testament, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28). This concept pops up everywhere in the Bible.

We need to rest so that we can listen to God. When we hear His voice, we need to obey so that we can get in line with what He is doing and what He wants us to do. It is not about us asking God to bless our plans, but instead about us getting in line with His plan and us drinking in His love. But… it starts with rest.

I am not sure if I really stressed enough how I feel today regarding the importance of rest. Go get some rest!
