My days are full. Yours probably are too. The average day for me can take me from a strategic planning session, to asking a donor for a gift to a particular project, watching a camp unfold at CRISTA camps, meeting one–on-one with my direct reports, phone conversations, interviewing key prospective employees, attending and leading meetings both inside and outside the organization, signatures, etc. I have been thinking lately about the importance of staying calm in the middle of the daily challenges. One day things “feel” like they are going fantastic, the next day some different news arrives that brings big disappointments.
I try to make it a practice when I get stretched and feel harried to take a few moments and pray and reflect. In just such a time this week I came upon Proverbs 29:11 “Fools give full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end.” The world needs calm people more than ever. The only thing we have control over is ourselves, and sometimes even that is challenging. Leaders especially need to stay focused on the goal over the long term, steer the ship through storms, keep perspective and stay calm.
